Personality order and disorder

A brief introduction to Myers-Briggs personality types

There are 16 subtypes in 4 temperaments. Temperament is the set of natural “first choice” inclinations we are born with; wheras character is the set of habits we acquire as we grow and mature over a lifetime.

First temperament: Guardian (SJ) – Security

  • ESTJ – Administrator/Supervisor
  • ESFJ – Seller/Provider
  • ISTJ – Trustee/Inspector
  • ISFJ – Conservator/Protector

Second temperament: Artisan (SP) – Sensation

  • ESTP – Promotor
  • ESFP – Entertainer/Performer
  • ISTP – Artisan/Crafter
  • ISFP – Artist/Composer

Third temperament: Rational (NT) – Knowledge

  • ENTJ – Field Marshall
  • ENTP – Inventor
  • INTJ – Mastermind
  • INTP – Architect

Fourth temperament: Idealist (NF) – Identity

  • ENFJ – Pedagogue/Teacher
  • ENFP – Journalist/Champion
  • INFJ – Author/Counselor
  • INFP – Questor/Healer

I have taken online tests to determine my personality type on various sites. I am confident that my temperament is Rational (NT) and most likely I am an INTJ (4 tests out of 8 ) or INTP (3/8), however once I got ENTP as result (1/8). INTJs are rare, comprising no more than, say, one percent of the population.

What kind of person is a Rational?

All Rationals (NTs) share the following core characteristics:

  • Rationals tend to be pragmatic, skeptical, self-contained, and focused on problem-solving and systems analysis.
  • Rationals pride themselves on being ingenious, independent, and strong willed.
  • Rationals make reasonable mates, individualizing parents, and strategic leaders.
  • Rationals are even-tempered, they trust logic, yearn for achievement, seek knowledge, prize technology, and dream of understanding how the world works.

Rationals are the problem solving temperament, particularly if the problem has to do with the many complex systems that make up the world around us. Rationals might tackle problems in organic systems such as plants and animals, or in mechanical systems such as railroads and computers, or in social systems such as families and companies and governments. But whatever systems fire their curiosity, Rationals will analyze them to understand how they work, so they can figure out how to make them work better.

In working with problems, Rationals try to find solutions that have application in the real world, but they are even more interested in the abstract concepts involved, the fundamental principles or natural laws that underlie the particular case. And they are completely pragmatic about their ways and means of achieving their ends. Rationals don’t care about being politically correct. They are interested in the most efficient solutions possible, and will listen to anyone who has something useful to teach them, while disregarding any authority or customary procedure that wastes time and resources.

Rationals have an insatiable hunger to accomplish their goals and will work tirelessly on any project they have set their mind to. They are rigorously logical and fiercely independent in their thinking — are indeed skeptical of all ideas, even their own — and they believe they can overcome any obstacle with their will power. Often they are seen as cold and distant, but this is really the absorbed concentration they give to whatever problem they’re working on. Whether designing a skyscraper or an experiment, developing a theory or a prototype technology, building an aircraft, a corporation, or a strategic alliance, Rationals value intelligence, in themselves and others, and they pride themselves on the ingenuity they bring to their problem solving.

Rationals are very scarce, comprising as little as 5 to 10 percent of the population. But because of their drive to unlock the secrets of nature, and to develop new technologies, they have done much to shape our world.

The inner world of an INTJ

INTJ stands for Introvert, iNtuitive, Thinking, Judging

To be introverted, does not necessarily mean to be shy or antisocial. Introverted people are using energy to communicate with people and need to be in solitude to recharge. Extroverted are the opposite i.e. using energy when in solitude and recharging when communicating with people. Introverted people usually enjoy company and communicating with people as much as extroverted do, they just don’t have so big need for it.

iNtuitive people are able to think “outside the box” as opposed to linear, restricted thinking.

People with thinking temperament use critical thoughts as a final deciding factor instead of feeling. This does not mean that a thinker does not have feelings or does not acknowledge them. Feelings are just not automatically the first consideration.

Judging people interact with the world by organising it in some way, thus are decisive. Perceivers are the opposite, they gather information from outside world and use it to structure their internal ideas or values and that makes them speculative. For this reason, perceivers remain spontaneous.

There might be a little bit of truth in this sarcastic description.

“INTJs are solid, competent personalities who may seem aloof and even arrogant, but who are typically highly skilled in any field which interests them. INTJs are confident in their skills and knowledge, self-assured, and imaginitive; their exceptional problem-solving skills make them ideal architects, auto mechanics, and tools of the evil empire. While it requires the driving will to conquer of an ENTJ to imagine the Death Star and the evil genius of an ENTP to invent its devastating weapons systems, the skill and technical prowess of the INTJ is what makes the whole thing work.

The INTJ sees life as a problem to be solved. For that reason, the INTJ is the person a company brings in from the outside to streamline production processes and identify redundant assets for termination. The INTJ’s combination of analyticial problem-solving skills and complete and utter disregard for the morality or consequences of his actions also make him ideal for the job of hatchet man, CIA operative, and helpdesk operator.

RECREATION: INTJs are often baffled by the strange and incomprehensible recreational rituals of other people, such as going to parties, watching television, and having sex. Instead, they prefer to spend their leisure time installing twin missile launchers in their cars to deter tailgaters and playing chess with megalomaniac CEOs of the Tyrell corporation.

COMPATIBILITY: Silly person, INTJs don’t have relationships! They may, however build their own friends.”

INTJs have original minds and great drive for implementing their ideas and achieving their goals. INTJs quickly see patterns in external events and develop long-range explanatory perspectives. When committed, INTJs efficiently organize a job and carry it through. INTJ is skeptical and independent, has high standards of competence and performance – for themselves and others.

Yes, that is me.

Thank you Carl Jung, Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs for explaining why my perception of life is so different than everyone elses. Thank you Zezere for introducing me to MBTI.
