Avatar

Finally I got myself out from the home sofa and out into the real world to the cinema to see my first ever movie in 3-D. Yes, with the futuristic 1970’s style 3-D goggles on my nose.

Alright, here we go, being a fan of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic films, I am not trying to be objective (as if I ever tried, haha). Take Star Wars, Starship Troopers, Lord of the Rings and Aliens. Put them all in a bowl, mix carefully, add some extra spice and voila, we have Avatar, which is the sum of all the previously mentioned movies and then some more. This movie is exceptionally beautiful and the 3-D effects just emphasise the warmth and beauty of the world the blue monkeys live in.

The plot is simple and not very original, but hey, the best fairy tales seldom are. One needs a prince, princess, deep meanings, love story, betrayal, battle scenes and… a happy ending, it is all here. The science-fiction part is equally impressing as well, the idea of Avatar, a loaned “remote-controlled” supernatural body, is something I don’t remember from anywhere else. Add every mans dream to be free like a bird and there you have it. The implementation of these well-tested clichés is just so good, thanks to James Cameron. So good, that I gave this movie a full five stars.

If you like science-fiction or fairy tales, go see this. Now.

Avatar, James Cameron, USA, 2009
